This coin is a silver Greek tetradrachm minted in Syracuse, Sicily, circa 317-289 BC. The obverse shows the head of Persephone right, wreathed in grain wearing earring and necklace. The reverse shows Nike standing half right, raising trophy of captured arms.
Persephone, daughter of Zeus and Demeter, is the Greek goddess of spring and queen of the Underworld. Worshipped in Syracuse, she is best known for the myth of her abduction by Hades, which explains the changing seasons. Her annual return from the Underworld to Earth symbolizes death, rebirth, and renewal. Common symbols of Persephone include the pomegranate, grain seeds, flowers, and the deer.
This coin was minted during the reign of Agathokles and commemorates his victory over Carthage and his daring invasion of Africa, symbolized by Nike assembling a war trophy on the reverse. Nike is the winged goddess of victory, associated with both athletic and military success.
