The Bermuda Railway

1931-1948

The Bermuda Railway system, known as the “Rattle and Shake,” debuted in October of 1931.

The track was 21 miles of single track which ran the full length of a car-free island. Much of the track stretched over bays and inlets suspended above the water atop concrete pylons. There were two lines based in Hamilton that headed east and west. The “trains” themselves were gasoline-powered motor coaches pulling one or two 40 foot coaches. The railway was mostly used by passengers as a more efficient means of travel to and from Hamilton than horse and buggy or ferry.

Construction and maintenance of the line prevented the railway from ever making money for its investors, but it played a vital part in the island’s tourism. In 2020 traveling by train may be a thing of the past but what remains is a beautiful network of trails to travel end to end of our island home.
