THE FREESIA
STERLING SILVER BERMUDA ICONS
Freesias are truly nature’s perfume. You will smell a patch of freesias in someone’s garden before you likely see them! Usually white or lavender or yellow they grow in clusters in grassy lawn and need minimal care. They grow from underground stems called “corns.”
While they aren’t the most exotic looking blossom, they do have the most intoxicating scent – potent and distinct yet not overpowering – which frankly rivals anything sold in a bottle.
Introduced to Bermuda in the late 1800s they appear in late winter around February and bloom through April. Like the onset of spring when kites and hot cross buns appear, freesias are a predictable annual arrival that we are sorry doesn’t last year round, but that is what makes them so beloved; they leave us wanting more.
The arch of their stem is a beautiful artistic line that holds 4-6 blossoms and so picking one stem is a wee bouquet in itself.
